The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland that sits at the front base of your throat
and is an essential organ that produces hormones to control metabolism, the body’s use of energy and regulates virtually every cell in your body. Yup, it’s pretty important. The most common type of thyroid disease in Canada is named after Dr. Hakaru Hashimoto who first described it in 1912. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s own immune system inappropriately attacks and destroys the thyroid tissue. This type of thyroid disease tends to run in families and is 5 to 10 times more common in women than men.
